Do you mind if...(ドゥ〜ユ〜マインド・イフ...)

英語はストレートで、婉曲な表現が少ないと思い込んでいませんか?

実際はその逆で、日本語よりも表現が豊かという見方もあります。

例えば「ペンをお借りできます?」に対しても、こんなにたくさんの言い回しがあります:

Can I use your pen?
Could I use your pen?
May I use your pen?
Could you lend me your pen?
Let me use your pen.
Would you let me use your pen?
Do you mind if I use your pen?
Can I ask you to lend me your pen?
Could I ask you to let me use your pen?

文法が論理的なので、例えばこんな言い方をしても、英語では別に不自然ではなく、意味も明確に伝わります:

Do you mind if I ask you whether it's possible for you to do ... (〜をして頂くことが可能かどうか、あなたに聞くことを許してもらえますか?)
