お腹ペコペコ!の意味です。英語は比喩表現が多いのですが、馬を一頭食べちゃえるくらい空腹とは、これまた大げさですね!

 

この他に horse(馬)を使った慣用句としては、“horse around” (馬鹿騒ぎする)や、“eat like a horse”(大食いする)、“strong as a horse”(馬のように強い、頑健な)などがあります。

 

また、“put the cart before the horse” は「荷車を馬の前に置く」ということから、本末転倒、前後を誤る、などの意味となり、

“beat a dead horse” は「死んだ馬にむちを打つ」なので、無駄なことをする、無駄骨を折る、既に決着のついた話題を蒸し返す、という意味になります。
